Myth Busted: Passive Voice Is Not Significantly Harder To Read/Comprehend

Are passive voice sentences really harder to read?  I hear this a lot as a reason to not use, or to at least use sparingly, the passive voice in writing.  So I decided to do a little test.  I took a series of sentences and wrote them in both the passive and active voice.  I then checked their readability statistics using Microsoft Word’s native tool for this.

Example 1: 

Active: “I mailed the letter.”

Flesch Reading Ease: 97

Flesch-Kincade Grade Level: 0.7 Read more…

The Usefulness Of Fragments

Fragments.  For some reason some people hate them. But I guarantee you that they are useful in writing a story. Plus, I guarantee you that done properly, and when not viewed in a program like MS Word that underlines them and calls bold attention to them, most people don’t even recognize the fragment is there.

Fragments are useful when writing dialogue because people normally speak in fragments from time to time. They are also useful for pacing. Fragments are fast. They can whiz by and speed up action.

So next time someone tells you not to use fragments in your writing, tell them thanks for the advice. Smile. Then let them be on their merry, little way.

Here’s A Tip: Don’t Throw Anything Away

I have a habit of not wanting to throw things away. Usually every year I have to force myself to get rid of things that are laying around the house and collecting dust.

I have been jotting down a lot of ideas these past few months and doing a lot of free writing. Thankfully, unlike the things around the house that get collected, most of the writing related material is either in a binder or stored digitally. Though mostly digitally. Yes, my digital files are double backed up too so I don’t worry a computer crash and losing them. Read more…
