Book Review: The Snow Queen by: Joan D. Vinge

The Snow Queen was released in 1980, but since I was just eight at the time, I never read it before now. It was never on my reading list because, frankly, I never had anyone recommend it as something that I should read. But, several months ago I came across it and added it to my pile of books to read.

The science fiction novel takes place on the worlds ruled by the Hegemony. In particular, one called Tiamat. The natives of this world are kept in a relative state of technological limbo by the Hegemony with technology only existing on the world during the reign of the “Winters” when the planet is able to be accessed through interstellar travel. When the gates close and the “Summers” take over, all technology is removed from the planet or destroyed until the gate reopens, and the “Winters” regain control.

Being Serious Is Better Than Kissing Ass

“Have you read this yet?” emails a friend of mine seeking an opinion on a book he was considering reading. The message contains a link to a fantasy book (self-published) on Amazon. I follow the link and, within five minutes, decide that the book probably won’t be going on my reading list any time soon.

The reason? All the reviews, save one, were nothing but hype. Lots of OMGs (often with lots of trailing exclamation points). Lots of people proclaiming the book as the “best” thing they’ve read in years. But no real reviews of the book. It was just post after post of nebulous praise. I bet the author called in every favor from every friend she had to accomplish this task. At least, that’s the way it seems. After all, if the book is so good, the “best” thing in years, why did it have to be self-published?  Not saying it isn’t good, and not that publishers don’t make mistakes and pass on good books, just saying that it is not likely to be the “best” book writen in years. Current Reading List

So my current reading list looks like this:

Nearly done with Feast of Souls (Magister Trilogy Book 1) by C.S. Friedman

Then I have The Innocent Mate by Karen Miller, The Snow Queen by Joan Vinge, and finally Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

That should handle me for the rest of the month I think.
