Ok, I’ve been rushing to complete my short story Second Chances for submission into a fantasy short story contest to see how things go. Deadline is fast appraoching, like tomorrow fast, and I have been doing some polishing.
The story follows Kath’ri-sa, an elf, and the deuteragonist of my novel Under the Darkened Moon. I just like saying the word deuteragonist. Its sounds so quirky.
Final stats on the short story are 5,941 words, Flesch Reading Ease of 84.3, and Flesch-Kincade Grade Level of 4.1. (more…)
Just recently, a new member came into our author’s group. She is a nice enough girl with a lot of great ideas and good critiques on other people’s work. After getting through the trial period she was allowed to beginning getting critiques on her own material. “You’re gonna love this story I wrote,” she beamed once submitting the book she has been working on. “Everyone else has,” added.
She was not so chipper after the critique of her first five chapters came back. No one was mean, but they were honest. The new girl’s face turned red with a cross between rage and embarrassment as reviews were given.
The critique centered around:
– lots of misused words that were not synonyms for what she wanted to say
– the fact that in the first five chapters (two scenes each) there were 10 different POV characters
– there appeared to be eight different plots happening with none standing out as the main one
– run-on sentences galore (more…)
Ah, yes, Twitter. 140 characters to say whatever it is that is on your mind. But are you guilty of any of these five major Twitter fails? Maybe it is time to rethink your life.
1. Demanding someone follow you in order for you to follow them.
Really? You have so little that is interesting to say that you have to bribe people to follow you? Shame.
2. Following someone, waiting for them to follow you, and then unfollowing them.
Can’t drum up followers any other way huh? (more…)

Catching Fire is book two of The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. It continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and her trials and tribulations after being a victor in the Hunger Games, a sadistic competition put on by the totalitarian government of a post-apocalyptic America. The games pit children against children in a yearly fight to the death.
First off, and bluntly, Catching Fire is not as good as The Hunger Games, the first book of the trilogy. Secondly, it is not a bad book and is quite above average. Thirdly, it suffers from, and even magnifies, one of the major problems with the first book – its predictability greatly detracts from the story. (more…)
